Neretva

Spot Overview

Situated at the mouth of the Neretva River Delta, Ušće Neretve is one of the most unique and popular kiteboarding destinations in Croatia. Unlike much of the Croatian coastline, which is dominated by rocky beaches and deep water, Neretva offers vast sandy beaches, shallow lagoons, and huge open riding areas.

The spot is particularly attractive for beginners thanks to its shallow water and forgiving environment, while advanced riders appreciate the flat-water freestyle conditions and long riding distances available throughout the lagoon.

The combination of reliable summer thermal winds, beautiful natural surroundings, and a vibrant kiteboarding community has made Neretva a must-visit destination for riders from across Europe.

Wind Behavior

Ušće Neretve is best known for its consistent thermal Maestral wind, which develops during sunny summer days and typically blows from the northwest.

The wind usually starts building around midday and strengthens throughout the afternoon, often reaching 15–25 knots. During strong thermal days, wind speeds can exceed 30 knots, creating excellent conditions for advanced riders.

One of the major advantages of Neretva is the relatively clean and stable airflow due to the open terrain surrounding the spot. Riders can often enjoy long, uninterrupted runs across the lagoon with minimal turbulence.

The strongest and most reliable conditions are usually found between June and September, with afternoons providing the best sessions.

Safety & Hazards

While Neretva is considered one of Croatia’s most beginner-friendly kite spots, riders should still be aware of several local considerations.

The shallow water area extends a long distance from shore, making it easier for beginners to stand and recover equipment. However, some sections of the lagoon contain mud banks, sandbars, and occasional underwater vegetation that can affect riding and launching.

During peak summer afternoons, the beach and lagoon can become crowded with kiteboarders, students, and wing foilers. Maintaining adequate spacing and following standard right-of-way rules is essential.

Strong thermal days can create challenging conditions for less experienced riders, particularly if oversized kites are used. Local schools are an excellent source of up-to-date advice regarding equipment selection and current conditions.

Sun exposure can also be significant due to the open nature of the location, so adequate hydration and sun protection are strongly recommended.

Local Scene

The atmosphere at Ušće Neretve is unlike anywhere else in Croatia. During the summer season, the beach becomes a gathering place for riders from all over Europe, creating a relaxed and international kiteboarding community.

Several beach bars located directly next to the kite area provide food, drinks, music, shade, and a place to relax between sessions. Sunset evenings at the bars overlooking hundreds of colorful kites are part of what makes the Neretva experience so memorable.

The surrounding delta landscape adds a unique backdrop, combining sandy beaches, river channels, mountains, and untouched nature into one spectacular setting.

The vibe is social, friendly, and laid-back, making it easy for solo travelers, groups, and families alike to feel welcome.

Schools

Ušće Neretve hosts several established kiteboarding schools offering beginner courses, private lessons, equipment rental, supervision, and coaching for more advanced riders.

The shallow water and wide-open riding area make it one of the best places in Croatia to learn kiteboarding safely and efficiently. Many visitors take their first lessons here before continuing their progression at other spots around the Adriatic.

Local instructors possess extensive knowledge of the spot’s wind patterns, lagoon layout, and safety considerations, helping riders get the most from their sessions regardless of experience level.

Whether you’re taking your very first lesson, learning transitions, landing your first jumps, or simply looking for a reliable place to ride, Ušće Neretve offers one of the most complete kiteboarding experiences in Croatia. 🪁🌊🏖️
